Spatial Ownership Essentials Review (get your kids to pick up!)

My kids are teens now so they’re not yet “done,” but they’re getting there.

But I remember the constant battle against messes when little kids live with you. If you’re like me, you want a home that looks great WITHOUT having to do ALL THE WORK YOURSELF. And, if you’ve been following me, you know you should NOT be doing all the work yourself, right?

Easier said than done, I know. At least without melt downs or ….ahem….. “raised” voices.

So what IS the secret to keeping a home that looks amazing, even with little ones running wild?

I recently met Jen, Neat Mama and professional organizer with a unique new approach to organizing kids’ stuff AND empowering them to keep their spaces neat and tidy.

It’s called the “Spatial Ownership” approach and I’m really excited to share it with you!

It addresses one of the biggest home challenges Moms face – getting kids to take ownership of their space and keep it looking nice without us having to beg, argue or cajole them.

The “Spatial Ownership” approach is based on 4 pillars:

  1. Creating the physical and mental structures kids need to be self-sufficient
  2. Reducing friction and eliminating obstacles holding them back
  3. Tapping into the natural “motivation centers” in kids’ brains so they want to participate
  4. Positively reinforcing the behavior you want to see more of

…All leading to kids who happily and independently pick up after themselves!

Jen’s been using this method for 5+ years in her home organizing business in Charleston, SC and she’s now teaching it to Moms all over the country. Her approach first caught my eye and THEN resonated with me when I went through the course myself.

The stories and photos from women who’ve used her methods are pretty remarkable. Here’s one example:

If you’re like me, you might be thinking “These clean rooms might look good in the picture, but they won’t ever last!”

But as this Mama shared with Jen, over a month later, her kids have maintained their clean rooms and now they’re even helping with the main living spaces. I loved hearing that because what we all really need is something sustainable that will actually last.

I would DEFINITELY have added her approach to my toolbox when my kids were little. Here’s what I loved about this training:

  • Jen gets to the heart of motivation and what really works with kids. She shows you how to work WITH your kids’ emotions and motivations so that they will work with YOU.
  • Her before and afters (like the one above) are REAL. I don’t have a magazine-perfect home and I can tell her clients are REAL people with real budgets and real, lived-in homes.
  • Great for kids who “don’t care” about neatness or ice cream or screen time incentives.
  • Logical incentives! Great explanation for what I did but didn’t really have the right terms to describe.
  • If you are able to focus, this will take you an hour from start to plan-in-hand.
  • This will work with other home management methods. If you have a system you like but still get overwhelmed, add some of these spatial ownership essentials and it can make a difference. In fact, if I had to do it all over again, I would totally combine this practical method with the fun, magic and extra incentive of The House Fairy.
  • If you use this link it’s only $7!!!! (for now, at least)

Now, it’s NOT magic, OK? You have to implement these ideas. But I do think it will help you in other areas of parenting, as well!
