Easiest Elderberry Syrup Recipe

Easiest Elderberry Syrup

Easiest Elderberry Syrup

I've made several variations, but this one uses the herbs and spices most of us already have around the house in their most common forms.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Active Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Difficulty easy

Materials

  • 1 cup dried Elderberries
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 heaping tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 scant tsp ground ginger
  • 1 scant tsp whole or ground cloves
  • big pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup honey

Tools

  • Cooking pot and glass jars for storage
  • measuring spoons and cups
  • spoon for stirring

Instructions

Place all ingredients except honey in a pot and bring to a boil. Let simmer for a half hour or so, reducing the liquid by about half and stirring to make sure it doesn't burn. Let cool enough to strain and enough to not overheat your honey. Strain into the honey, if possible, to save one more dish to wash!

    Refrigerate or freeze.

Notes

Feel free to add ANY other herbs that you feel work well for your family. In the past I've also added orange peel, elecampane, echinacea, astragalus, and rosehips. But not all at the same time.

I have frozen my batches before and it seems to do just fine upon defrosting. If you know you need a lot, this saves time and money.

I'm no dosage expert. I have my kids take up to a tsp during cold and flu season and then throughout the day when they are sick.
